greyscale - the story

Growing up and living in the Northern Territory - the heartland of big barramundi - fish and fishing have always played a huge part of my life. Countless hours spent on the water have given me a deep appreciation for the beauty, individuality and stories behind every fish.

Greyscale was born from that passion…

…Combined with an admiration for the traditional Japanese art of Gyotaku (fish printing) and a love of bold graphic design and minimalist colour palettes.

Rather than creating traditional fish prints, I produce detailed digital fish portraits from photographs, blending striking monochrome design with the unique shape, markings and character of every catch, to create artwork that celebrates both the fish and the memories behind it.

Every fish that I work on teaches me something new. One of the greatest joys of creating these portraits is studying the subtle, and sometimes spectacular differences that make each fish unique. From the placement of every scale to the scars, markings and patterns that tell its story.

While the barramundi (Lates calcarifer) will always be my favorite species, I’m fascinated by the incredible diversity of forms, textures and markings found across all fish and marine life.

Every portrait is an opportunity to appreciate that natural beauty and transform it into a lasting piece of art.
